ISO 15930 (PDF/X): Print Production PDF
What is ISO 15930?
ISO 15930 defines PDF/X (PDF for eXchange), a subset of PDF designed for reliable graphic arts and print production workflows. PDF/X ensures print-ready files contain all necessary information and meet technical requirements for professional printing.
Purpose and Goals
PDF/X addresses print production challenges by ensuring complete file information (all fonts, images, and resources embedded), predictable color output (proper color management), and elimination of problematic features (no RGB without profiles, no transparency in early versions).
PDF/X Variants
PDF/X-1a (ISO 15930-1:2001)
The most restrictive PDF/X variant, PDF/X-1a requires CMYK (or spot colors) only, all fonts embedded, all images embedded, no transparency, and no layers. It ensures maximum compatibility with all print workflows but limits design flexibility.
PDF/X-3 (ISO 15930-3:2002)
Similar to PDF/X-1a but allows device-independent color (Lab, ICC-based color spaces). This enables RGB images with embedded ICC profiles, providing more flexibility while maintaining color accuracy.
PDF/X-4 (ISO 15930-4:2003, updated 2010)
Based on PDF 1.6, PDF/X-4 supports transparency, layers, and live transparency (no flattening required). It allows modern design features while maintaining print reliability. PDF/X-4 is the current recommended standard for print production.
PDF/X-5 (ISO 15930-8:2010)
Extends PDF/X-4 to allow external content references. This enables large-format printing workflows where images may be stored separately. PDF/X-5g (guaranteed) requires all content, while PDF/X-5pg (partial guarantee) allows external references.
Key Requirements
PDF/X files must meet strict requirements:
- Font embedding: All fonts must be embedded
- Color management: Proper ICC profiles or device-dependent color only
- Bleed and trim boxes: Print boxes must be defined
- No encryption: Files cannot be password-protected
- Output intent: Target printing condition must be specified
- No JavaScript or forms: Interactive features prohibited
Output Intent
PDF/X files must specify an output intent describing the target printing condition. This includes information about the printing process (offset, digital, etc.), substrate (coated paper, uncoated, etc.), and color profile (ISO Coated v2, SWOP, etc.). The output intent ensures consistent color reproduction.
Use Cases
PDF/X is required or recommended for:
- Commercial printing: Magazines, brochures, catalogs
- Packaging: Product packaging and labels
- Large format: Posters, banners, signage
- Newspaper production: Daily and weekly publications
- Book printing: Trade and textbook production
Choosing the Right PDF/X Variant
Select based on workflow requirements: PDF/X-1a for maximum compatibility with older workflows, PDF/X-3 when using RGB images with profiles, PDF/X-4 for modern workflows supporting transparency, and PDF/X-5 for workflows with external content management.
Creating PDF/X Files
Professional design software (Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, etc.) supports PDF/X export. Configure export settings for desired PDF/X variant, specify output intent matching printing conditions, embed all fonts and images, define bleed and trim boxes, and validate the result.
Validation and Preflight
PDF/X compliance must be verified before sending to print. Preflight tools check all requirements, identify issues, and confirm the file is print-ready. Many printers require validated PDF/X files to accept jobs.
