The Problem

Images in your PDF appear blurry, pixelated, or low quality when viewed on screen or printed.

Understanding Image Resolution

Image quality depends on resolution (DPI - dots per inch). For screen viewing, 72-150 DPI is sufficient. For printing, 300 DPI is standard. If a 72 DPI image is printed, it appears blurry because there aren't enough pixels to create sharp output at print size.

Solutions

1. Use Higher Resolution Source Images

The best solution is preventing the problem. Use high-resolution images when creating PDFs. For print, use 300 DPI images. For screen, 150 DPI is adequate. Once a low-resolution image is in a PDF, you cannot increase its quality.

2. Recreate PDF with Better Settings

If you have access to source files, recreate the PDF with higher image quality settings. Disable automatic downsampling, use higher JPEG quality settings, and ensure images are at appropriate resolution before embedding.

3. Replace Low-Quality Images

Use PDF editing software to replace blurry images with higher-resolution versions. This requires the original high-quality images and PDF editing tools.

4. Accept Limitations for Screen Viewing

If the PDF is for screen viewing only, moderate image quality may be acceptable. Blurriness is more noticeable in print than on screen.

Can You Fix Blurry Images?

Once an image is blurry in a PDF, you cannot truly fix it. Upscaling or sharpening filters can improve appearance slightly but cannot add detail that wasn't captured originally. The only real solution is replacing with higher-quality source images.

Balancing Quality and File Size

Higher image quality means larger file sizes. For email distribution, some compression is necessary. Find the right balance: use moderate compression that reduces file size without creating noticeable blurriness.
